President of the University of Leeds Visited SJTU

On the afternoon of May 19, Sir Alan Langlands, President of the University of Leeds, and Vice President Yu Haisui, visited SJTU. SJTU President Lin Zhongqin greeted the visitors.

There was a long history of cooperation between the University of Leeds and SJTU, especially in the fields of Humanities and Management. Presidents of both sides hoped further cooperation in Engineering and other aspects of scientific research. Both sides introduced their respective disciplines. It was discussed that cooperation opportunities would be further explored in the field of robotics and historical humanities research, relevant professors exchanging visits would be organized, co-organized bilateral seminars would be held, and cooperation would be carried out in training doctoral students.

The University of Leeds, a member of the Russell University Group, was founded in 1904, but the school history could date back to the establishment of the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831 and the establishment of the Yorkshire Polytechnic Institute in 1874. The school has cultivated six Nobel Prize winners and many other famous alumni, including John Tolkien and Leslie Cheung. It has received a high reputation in teaching and research, and in 2016 it ranked 14th in the TIMES British universities and 12th in the world rankings of the latest U.S.NEWs World University. There are total 32,138 students, who are from 147 countries, including 29,234 full-time students. 23,924 undergraduates and 8,214 graduate students.
